The SCM Minimax S400P is a vertical bandsaw with a 400 mm or 15.74 inch throat that can be used to make straight or curved cuts in wood, plastic, and certain composites. The saw has an adjustable fence and a tiltable table to accommodate a variety of workpieces.

How to Start

  1. Get a think[box] Ability Badge: Come to think[box] and ask a Student Worker for an Ability Badge Orientation. They will ask you to read sections of the think[box] Access Policies and Safety Policies and then you will read and sign an electronic Machine Shop Access Agreement. You will be given an Ability Badge, which must be worn at all times when you are using the machine shop. Note, you are not yet approved to use the machines in the machine shop.
  2. Review the Tutorial: Read the think[box] Sawing Tutorial and familiarize yourself with the parts, terminology, and general safety information pertaining to the saws.
  3. Take the Online Safety Quiz: Take and pass the think[box] online Sawing Safety Quiz. You must get 100% on the quiz to pass. Refer to the Sawing Tutorial as you take the quiz. If you do not pass the first time, review your answers and make sure you know why you didn't pass, then take the quiz again. You may take the quiz as many times as you need to until you pass.
  4. Schedule an in Person Certification Class*: Go to the Training Scheduler to schedule a time to take the think[box] Sawing Certification Class. This is a 1.5 hour class taught by think[box] staff that covers basic sawing safety and operation. Upon successful completion of the class, you will be given a "SAW" sticker for your ability badge that grants you permission to use the think[box] saws during all open hours.

    * If you already know how to use this equipment, please use the above link anyway and use the comments section of the online scheduler to indicate your level of familiarity with the equipment. Depending on your past experience think[box] staff are willing to expedite the certification process.
